How does laser eye surgery work?

Your eye works similarly to a camera, with the light-processing retina and two lenses to focus the image. These lenses are called the natural (crystalline) lens and the cornea. These lenses must work together for sharp, clear sight, focusing the light on the retina. An over or underpowered eye causes blurred vision. Glasses or contact lenses can correct this, but are not suited to all.

Laser eye surgery works by precisely reshaping the cornea, permanently refocusing the eye, and avoiding the need for contact lenses or glasses.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

Hundreds of millions of people have been treated around the world. With several decades of experience, modern laser eye surgery is unrecognisable from its beginnings. An estimated 30 million people annually have laser eye surgery (1). Complication rates are low, and satisfaction rates are the highest of any elective procedure (2).

No surgical procedure is, however, without some risk. It is always essential to choose your surgeon carefully.

Mr Darcy sits on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Refractive Surgery Working Group, helping define the UK's professional standards.

Are there different types of laser eye surgery?

There are three fundamental techniques with laser eye surgery, all achieving the same result; Lenticular extraction, LASIK and Surface laser. There are many reasons why you may suit one approach rather than another. We offer a comprehensive range, meaning we can always help you to choose the most suited method. We believe price should not be a factor, so our laser eye surgery is provided at a single price.

Lenticular Extraction

Treats

  • Short-sightedness

  • Astigmatism

  • Presbyopia

Lenticular extraction (sometimes called SMILE) is the most modern method of performing laser eye surgery. It provides excellent results with a painless and rapid recovery.

Using air bubbles, the latest generation laser delicately shapes a contact lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue aimed to correct your vision. This tissue is removed, and the procedure is over. There are no blades, or flaps, just air bubbles.

Key benefits

Safe

Lenticular extraction is minimally invasive and safe.

Painless

Painless both during and after the procedure.

Fast recovery

Rapid visual recovery within a couple of days meaning you can get back to your normal activities without delay.

Minimally invasive

This gentle procedure uses air bubbles to delicately and accurately correct your vision.

LASIK

Treats

  • Short-sightedness

  • Long-sightedness

  • Astigmatism

  • Presbyopia

LASIK corrects your vision in three easy steps;

  1. Thin flap created by a laser using air bubbles

  2. Vision correction laser treatment

  3. Flap repositioned

The vision rapidly recovers within the first 24-48h. LASIK is a painless procedure, other than a very mild gritty sensation on the first night. The flap adheres very quickly, but you must avoid rubbing the eyes for the first few days.

Key benefits

Safe

Millions of people have been safely treated around the world.

Painless

Painless both during and after the procedure.

Fast recovery

Rapid visual recovery within a couple of days meaning you can get back to your normal activities without delay.

Minimally invasive

This gentle procedure creates a thin flap using air bubbles to allow the corrective treatment below.

Surface Laser

Treats

  • Short-sightedness

  • Long-sightedness

  • Astigmatism

  • Presbyopia

Surface laser is the original method of laser eye surgery introduced in the 1980s. It has been called many different things, e.g. Photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK), Trans-epi PRK, LASEK, and Advanced surface ablation (ASA). Since the 1980s, it has dramatically changed, with modern lasers now even capable of correcting and treating irregular corneas. Surface laser remains an essential method for thin, scarred or irregular corneas and those unsuitable for the other techniques.

The visual recovery is slower than the other methods, taking a fortnight to reach ~80% of the final outcome. The vision will finally settle during the first three months.

Key benefits

Safe

Millions of people have been safely treated around the world.

No Flap

Surface laser does not require a flap.

Greater range of suitability

The ability to treat complex corneas: scars, irregular and thinner corneas. Also more suitable for patients who may suffer from mild dry eyes or other conditions.

Minimally invasive

The laser treatment is applied to the eye's surface, often without any contact with the eye.
