Why do I need glasses?
Common Eye Conditions
Short-sightedness (Myopia)
Light rays fall short of the retina due to the eye being too powerful. Laser eye surgery can typically treat up to -8 to -10 dioptres. Implantable contact lenses can treat up to -20 dioptres of short-sightedness.
Long-sightedness (Hyperopia)
Light rays focus behind the retina when the eye is underpowered, leading to hyperopia (farsightedness). Standard laser eye surgery can correct hyperopia up to +4.00 diopters. However, new Allotex Hyperopic Inlays enable treatment of much higher levels of hyperopia. Additionally, implantable contact lenses can address long-sightedness of up to +10 diopters.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism creates two focal points, which can fall in front of or behind the retina or a combination of both. It can be corrected by laser eye surgery, lens replacement surgery, or Implantable contact lenses.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is an age-related condition that affects the ability to focus on close objects, typically starting around age 40. It occurs as the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible, leading to blurred vision for nearby items and requiring people to hold reading materials farther away. People who are long-sighted typically notice this sooner, whereas short-sightedness can hide its effects. To correct presbyopia, individuals often use reading glasses, bifocals, or multifocal contact lenses, or they may consider surgical options.
Why does astigmatism matter?
Astigmatism causes two focal points of light to focus on the retina, causing ghosting or blurring of vision, in between 30-60% of the population.
It can usually be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Alternatively we can permanently apply the astigmatism correction to the intraocular lens we insert into your eye. This may avoid the need for glasses or contact lenses, offering you more freedom. We offer astigmatism correction as standard.*
